I work as a public relations officer at the home of J. L. Runeberg, and I am often asked for recommendations on places to eat, especially where to get Runeberg cakes. People want to enjoy them all year round, not just on Runeberg Day. So where can you find them? At least the Tea and Coffee House Helmi, Café Fanny, Porvoo Roastery and Zum Biespiel. People come to Porvoo from other cities and further afield, and the choice is good and of high quality. Here are a few of my favourites.
Relaxed lunch spot Zum Beispiel
Zum Biespiel has a varied menu, good food and delicious bread, which we sometimes take home. The restaurant also serves lunch at tables, so there’s no need to queue for food or take plates to the counter. The table service elevates you above the everyday.
I often head to Zum on my weekdays and try different dishes from the menu. Even in larger groups, everyone can always find something to suit themselves.
In addition to Runeberg cakes, you can also get Runeberg ice cream at Zum.
Atmospheric Café Fanny
Café Fanny, on the edge of the Town Hall Square, serves good cappuccinos and delicious savoury and sweet dishes. On the sheltered terrace you can sit and admire the beauty of Old Porvoo long into autumn.
If I haven’t eaten too many tarts on Runeberg Day, I might enjoy one with a cappuccino at Fanny.

Brunberg always draws a crowd, and it’s a good place to pick up some goodies to take home. My personal Brunberg favourites are the sugar-free rice pudding and liquorice taffy.
A summer must is the ice cream from the Old Porvoo Ice Cream Factory. You can find it at stalls all over Porvoo.
