Must see in Porvoo

The Cathedral is dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus. The church took its present form at the end of the 15th century. Services are held in Finnish on Sundays at 10 am and in Swedish at 12 noon. The Cathedral can accommodate 750 people and it can be reserved for baptisms, marriage ceremonies and funerals at the Parish Office. For guided tours of the Cathedral and free concerts.

Finland’s national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg and Fredrika Runeberg lived with their sons in Porvoo. In their house museum the works of art, Runeberg’s hunting weapons in the ‘fox skin room’, and the porcelain in the cupboards all serve as reminders of both everyday and social life of the family. In Fredrika’s garden the scent of roses, mock-orange and fruit trees fill the air in summer.

The red shore houses located by the Porvoo River are the most photographed attractions in Porvoo. Most of the shore houses were built in the 1760s and they have once served as for example storages. In the late 19th century, one of the shore houses also served as the town’s customs. Today, you can find for example restaurants, accommodation and shops at the shore houses.

The Art Factory Culture and Congress Centre is a spectacular place for experiential meetings. The heart of the renovated factory building is the Avanti hall (800 people). Other premises include the Factory Hall (200 people), smaller meeting rooms (10–90 people) and the cinema auditoriums (50–250 people). The Art Factory operates as an entity where the worlds of art, entertainment and culture meet. Combine your meeting with an experience!

Albert Edelfelt spent 26 summers in the Porvoo region and painted more than 220 works here, several of which won prizes in Paris and were bought for museum collections. The studio, built in 1883 as the artist’s working space, functions as a studio museum. The studio exhibits drawings, heliogravures and photographs, as well as artefacts that belonged to the artist.

In 2019, a new building, Villa Albert, was completed in the courtyard of Albert Edelfelt’s studio, which houses a showroom for changing exhibitions and a museum shop.

Historic and atmospheric manor and spa hotel in the middle of a 14 ha manor park by the sea. Haikko offers hotel, restaurant, meeting, spa and wellness services. Bosgård manor and organic farm is situated 14 kilometers East of Porvoo. Get acquainted with a working traditional Finnish farm along the manor’s extensive nature trails (400 m, 1,5 km and 4 km). The trails have information boards in Finnish, with translation booklets available in Swedish, English and Russian. Topics include the manor’s Charolais organic cattle, the preservation of traditional heritage landscapes and non-clearcut forestry. The nature trails are free and open all year. If the manor shop is closed, pick up a map in English from the mail box (check seasonal opening hours at bosgard.com). There are two picnic tables along the nature trails.

The idyllic Postimäki museum is one of Finland’s best preserved areas of cottagers’ dwellings. The buildings date back to the 19th century, and nearly all of them are still on their original sites. Come and take a look how the craftsmen and -women lived in the 19th century. You can also take part in a handicrafts day or community singing, order a dramatised guided tour or watch a play at the summer theatre.

Pellinki has a shimmering sea, lush islands and rugged cliffs. The active archipelago and village community offers a many of services and events. The Pellinki archipelago is at its best during the beautiful summer season, but services can be found all year round.
