The City of Porvoo’s municipal engineering department uses recovered materials at its construction sites when possible. These materials include e.g. crushed concrete, foam glass, stabilised clay, crushed stone from other worksites, woodchip and garden waste compost.
The recovered materials come from surplus soil, industrial by-products and waste, slightly contaminated soil and the materials of old ground structures, and they can be used to replace natural stone materials in earthworks. Recovered materials can be used either as they are or as components to replace untouched stone materials or to improve their properties.
The city also aims at reusing the surplus soil from construction primarily in landscaping and other construction sites either directly or after modification.
