Summer Sounds | Chamber Concert “Afternoon Hyper”

József Hárs, conductor
Musicians from Avanti!

Anna Clyne: Roulette
Robert Honstein: Endless Landscape
Ludwig van Beethoven: Grosse Fuge
Shelley Washington: A Kind of Lung
Michael Gordon: Hyper

The chamber concert in Porvoo Cathedral introduces friends and previous pupils of Summer Sounds’ Artistic Director Julia Wolfe. The concert also includes the very modern Grosse Fuge by Beethoven, a monument to polyphony originally intended as the finale of a string quartet. Roulette by Anna Clyne, born in London, combines a string quartet with a recorded human voice. The title refers to the place where the piece was premiered in Brooklyn in New York. Hyper, by Wolfe’s Bang on a Can partner Michael Gordon, presents paradoxes in sound reminiscent of the optic illusions of the Penrose Stairs or the drawings of M.C. Escher. Two exciting new works were commissioned by Carnegie Hall this season for Wolfe’s residency there: Endless Landscape by Robert Honstein is a whirlwind of intricate patterns and lines, and A Kind of Lung by Shelley Washington includes improvisation and is like breathing – an experience shared by all.

Admission to the concert is free.
